Shalom! My name is Yusuf Kurniawan. I was born in a Christian family and grew up in a house church. At the age of 18, I was called to be a servant of God to a younger generation whose lives are far from God.

I have been active in various churches and youth ministries but during the pandemic I was forced to do everything from home. This is what the pandemic taught me:

Prayer is indispensable

During the pandemic, young people experienced new problems and needed prayer. Some were sick because of Covid, some lost their jobs and some faced difficult family dynamics. Many lost direction and became depressed. Prayer became urgent. As I prayed together with young people, I helped them realise that they were not alone. I taught them to be honest and open with God and express even their darkest thoughts and feelings. This enabled us to draw near to God in prayer. I continue to pray with young people. During the pandemic I prayed with them via Zoom but now I can visit them in their homes.

Training is crucial

Before the pandemic I was very busy ministering at church and teaching at school. During the pandemic I couldn’t do any of those things. Instead, I was able to meet regularly via Zoom with small groups of people who shared similar burdens. I prepared study modules to address their needs and concerns. These modules have since been used in various churches to train and disciple young people.

Reading books like Issues Facing Christians Today (John Stott), The Mission of God’s People: A Biblical Theology of the Church’s Mission (Christopher J Wright), and The Complete Book of Discipleship: On Being and Making Followers of Christ (Bill Hull) helped me understand that discipleship needs to be holistic and transformative. We need to encourage each other to make Jesus Lord of every aspect of our life and allow the Holy Spirit to change us and use us to influence our surroundings. Our society and environment are under severe stress. I want to help young people understand their responsibility to care for their environment and community.

Get set, go!

This discipleship ministry helped me realise how young people form part of the priesthood of believers. In his mission, God involves people of all backgrounds and ages. When they appreciate this, young Christians grow and mature. Whatever they do, with a strong theology of creation and work they can understand how their own work is part of God’s mission and an opportunity to present a taste of God’s kingdom.

Please pray that I will continue to learn to feel for God’s people and lead them as a fellow servant of our Lord and Saviour.

You can help supply theological textbooks to students like Iman Jaya Zandroto as they prepare to serve growing churches.

I was born and raised in a Christian family. I was not a devout Christian but, like everyone else in our church, as I neared the end of high school I started to study the catechism and prepare for confirmation.

Prepared to believe

That is when I began to read the Bible every day. The more I read God’s word, the more I saw how much God loves me, and the more I loved God. I was convinced that I was a sinner and am saved by grace through Jesus Christ. Realising how great God’s grace is in my life, I decided to be his servant.

Prepared to serve

To serve the church and society we need preparation. I learned that by reading books before leading a Bible study, I was able to answer people’s questions. To better prepare myself to serve God I decided to study theology. Reading books and learning from professors helps me grasp and explain the meaning of Bible passages that are difficult to understand.

After completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees at two seminaries in my country, I started a second master’s degree at the Vancouver School of Theology in 2019.

Prepared to learn

Studying with other international students enables me to learn about other cultures. I like visiting new places, but adapting to a new environment is difficult. Financial limitations have been an obstacle, especially when buying books. However, the greatest challenge is reading books and writing assignments in my second language. Please pray that God will raise up people to write theological textbooks in my language!

In my first semester abroad I struggled a lot. But I keep learning and putting my hope in God. Thanks to his kindness, I feel satisfied with the results of my studies. After I finish studying, I want to do many things for my country and the church.

Please pray that God will give me his wisdom so I can usefully apply my knowledge to encourage believers and build up the church.

You can help Lothy Hueang publish the first Christian books written in her language by local Christians.

“I voluntarily and unequivocally resign from believing in this foreign religion.” A policeman stands over me, watching me closely. I try to hide my tears. “If the authorities catch me continuing to practise this foreign religion, the police will no longer be held responsible for whatever happens to me.”

The police had been stalking me for two years. Some in our government hate Christianity. Christianity is the enemy. I am the enemy. Do I sign away my faith, or run?

The open door

I had often wondered if the stories about Jesus were true. I didn’t really want to find out. I had seen what happens to followers of the Christian religion. They are isolated, followed, tortured and sometimes killed.

One night I slept restlessly. I woke to hear a voice calling my name. A knock at the front door followed. I dressed quickly and went to answer it, but no one was there. Confused, I returned to my bed. My family accused me of hallucinating, but I knew that it wasn’t in my head.

The next morning I went to church for the first time with my uncle. I sat in the pew, unsure of what to expect. Another woman shared with me words from the Bible. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” Immediately, all fear and doubt left me. I knew who had been calling my name. I knew who had been knocking. I knew the truth. That day I became a follower of Jesus.

What should I do?

I signed the document. However, when no one was looking I continued to go to church. Secretly, I discipled new believers. But when the police threatened to kill me, my friends hid me and helped me escape to Thailand.

What should I do? Should I listen to my government or to my God? I can’t keep quiet about what I know. My people need to hear the Gospel. I decided to return home and devote my life to telling people about Jesus.

Religious freedom is guaranteed by our constitution but evangelism, training and church-planting are outlawed. The authorities don’t want Christianity to spread. We face growing persecution, but an even bigger threat is the lack of Christian books.

I am only one person. I can’t be in more than one place at a time. But books can go where I cannot. I want to write books and produce radio programs that will bring the Gospel to my people.

With books we can train Bible teachers, leaders and evangelists. We want our people to be able to know and worship God in their own language.

Please pray that we will grow in boldness and wisdom. Pray that our heavenly Father will prepare the hearts of our people, so that when they hear God’s Word they will believe in him.
